Hair-Free: A Guide to Hair Removal Methods

Women and body hair have a convoluted history. Did you know that body hair used to be a proud display of femininity in the Middle Ages? That’s a far reach from society’s modern perspective of body hair on women.

Most women feel pressured to have minimal body hair, as excess patches are deemed “unclean” or “hyper-masculine.”

However, some women prefer to be hair-free for other reasons. They may like the way smooth skin feels or wish to reduce friction when engaging in sports like swimming. Whatever your reason, you should familiarize yourself with the various hair-removal methods available to you.

Below, we’ll explore four of the most effective hair-removal methods.

1. Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a long-term option, but note that it’s not permanent. This treatment works by damaging your hair follicles with high-heat lasers. The process prevents new hair from growing for at least several months, leaving you with smooth skin.

Anyone can opt for laser hair removal, but it tends to work best on individuals with light skin and dark hair. People with darker skin tones may experience pigment changes, but these alterations are usually temporary.

Note: Be aware of the dangers of laser hair removal and sun exposure — the two don’t mix well together. You’ll need to limit your exposure to the sun before and after your treatment.

2. Hair Removal Cream

If you’d like to explore a quicker way to stay hair-free, consider using hair removal cream. Some creams are available for direct purchase at your local drug store, or you can have your doctor prescribe you a stronger cream.

Whatever cream you obtain, ensure to follow the instructions for use. For example, you should never use a hair removal cream meant for pubic hair on your face. This mistake can result in unwanted side effects, including rashes, burning, and acne breakouts.

3. Hair Removal Wax: Pre-Made Strips

Pre-made waxing strips are mess-free and great options for beginners. They come with a pre-measured amount of cold, soft wax, so there’s no risk of applying too much.

The only “heating” involved with pre-made strips is rubbing the strip between your palms. Once you take care of this step, you can apply the strip to the desired area. Then, just take the strip off in the opposite direction of your hair’s growth.

4. Sugaring Hair Removal

Sugaring is a natural, DIY hair removal method. You’ll have to make your own paste, so most women only use this method on small areas of their bodies (like their upper lips).

Follow these steps to make your sugar mixture:

  1. Bring four chamomile tea bags to a boil on your stovetop.
  2. Let them boil for two minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and allow the pot to cool for 30 seconds.
  4. Remove the tea bags and pour half the water into a separate saucepan.
  5. Add one-fourth cup of lemon juice and two cups of sugar to the water.
  6. Stir together over medium heat and bring to a boil.
  7. Reduce the heat for a few minutes.
  8. Remove the mixture from heat, pour it into a bowl, and let it cool.
  9. Spread the mixture over your upper lip using a popsicle stick.
  10. Apply a cotton waxing strip over the mixture.
  11. Pull the strip off.

You should notice your hair come off seamlessly! Just be careful not to burn yourself.
